First Sunday of Advent

1 December 2019

You do not know the day.

Introduction

At the beginning of the Advent season, we consider the coming of the Lord at the end of time.  This is because Advent is the experience of all the year round.  Every time we pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “thy kingdom come,” we are living the power of Advent.  Christ will come again.

Todays Readings

First Reading: Isaiah 2:1-5

We climb the mountain of God separately, but we meet at the summit.

Second Reading: Romans 13:11-14

We are in the night, but we can see the down coming.

Gospel: Matthew 24:37-44

Pray, think, care and then you will be awake, ready for God in all things.

OUR PARISH

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! We are sending out an urgent call for Salvation Army Kettle volunteers at Loblaws (Kingston Centre), for December.  Shifts are one-hour and run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you are able to offer up an hour of your time, please call Sharon Lillis at 613-549-0559, or email sharon.lillis48@gmail.com.

2020 ENVELOPES are available for pick-up at the back of the church.  If you are currently not using envelopes but wish to do so, please contact the parish office at 613-547-5004 to request them, or complete the sign-up sheet on the table beside the envelopes.

FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION On Friday, 6 December 2019, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will commence at 9:00 a.m. and continue until 5:00 p.m.  You are encouraged to spend an hour with the Lord.

BUILDING FUND  The monthly collection of the Building Fund will take place next weekend, 7-8 December 2019. Thank you for your support.

CATHOLIC WOMENS LEAGUE POTLUCK & APPRECIATION DINNER previously scheduled for 9 December will now take place on 2 December at 6:00 p.m., in the parish hall.  Please bring your favourite dish and join the fun.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT Join us for an afternoon of Christmas music, featuring the local talent of Chris Murphy, Jon McLurg and Brian Flynn, (three members of the band, Turpin’s Trail) in the church on Thursday, 5 December 2019, from 1:00-3:00 p.m.  Refreshments will be served in the parish hall; a free-will offering would be gratefully appreciated.

BAKE & CRAFT SALE AND THEME BASKET RAFFLE hosted by the Catholic Women’s League, will take place 7-8 December 2019, after all Masses, in the parish hall.  Pies, breads, cookies, scones and many other baked goods.  Tickets will be sold for the Theme Basket Draw.

PENANCE CELEBRATION The Advent Penance Celebration for St. Joseph’s will be held next Sunday, 8 December 2019, at 2:00 p.m.  Following a brief liturgy, all will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  A number of visiting clergy will be present for this celebration, and all in the parish, and indeed from outside the parish, are most welcome to attend.

CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT We are looking for children to fill various roles in the Christmas Eve Pageant and Christmas Eve Children’s Choir.  If your child is age 4 or older, and would like to participate in this year’s Nativity pageant at the 5:15 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass, please plan to attend upcoming practices at the church.  The pageant is narrated, and therefore the children do not have speaking roles; so even the shiest can participate.  Older students are encouraged to take part, as we always need readers for Narrator, Lector and Prayer of the Faithful.  All are welcome! Children, grade 3 and up, are also invited to rehearse for the Children’s Choir on Christmas Eve.  There will be three rehearsals for the pageant and choir on Sunday, 8, 15 and 22 December, from noon until 1:00 p.m. (immediately following the 11:00 a.m. Mass), for both the pageant and the choir in the church.  For information, contact sheilafowler16@gmail.com.

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY will take place on Monday, 9 December 2019, at 7:30 p.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral.  Archbishop Mulhall will preside.  Reception to follow at École Cathédrale.  All are cordially invited to attend.

  1. JOSEPHS YOUTH GROUP will gather on Friday, 13 December 2019, from 6:30-8;30 p.m., in the parish hall. We will enjoy social time with fun ice-breakers, games, Christmas carols and hot chocolate, as well as some quiet time in the church to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. For information, contact Alison at bogle@alcdsb.on.ca, or Angela at 613-547-8116.

BIRDS & FLOWERS COLLECTION Each year, St. Joseph’s attempts to provide for those who are in need at this Christmas season.  If you are in a position to assist those who require extra help, you are encouraged to place your contribution in an envelope, and to write your name and envelope number on it.  This will enable the parish to continue to help others in the spirit of this season.  Thank you for your assistance.

MINISTRY FAIR On 18-19 January 2020, after all Masses, the Parish Engagement Group will host a Ministry Fair in the parish hall.  The various Parish Ministries will be highlighted, indicating how they each enrich the daily life of St. Joseph’s.  When you volunteer for a Ministry, you show what kind of parish you want to belong to!

PRAYER BOOK A book has been placed in a place of honour near the Blessed Sacrament.  You are invited to write in it those needs and concerns for which you would like our St. Joseph’s family / community to pray.  Wishing to respect everyone’s privacy, please keep all entries anonymous.

CHRISTMAS CAKES will not be distributed through the parish this year.  They are available from the Toronto office of Campaign Life Coalition at clc@campaignlifecoalition.com or 1-416-204-9749.
