In Advent we look forward to the coming of Jesus and prepare our hearts by faith to meet him.
First Reading: Isaiah 63:16-17, 64:1, 3-8
The prophet proclaims the Lord as Father and Redeemer, and longs for him to reveal himself.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9
Paul expresses thanks for the Christian witness and help of the Spirit as the faithful wait for the return of Jesus.
Gospel: Mark 13:33-37
Jesus encourages us to have a watchful expectancy and readiness for his return.

SPIRITUALITY INQUIRY The next session of the Spiritual Inquiry gatherings will be held on Wednesday, 6 December 2017, from 7:00-8:30 p.m., in the parish hall. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss our Catholic faith, religious practices and spiritual beliefs. In a relaxed environment, participants will have the opportunity to express thoughts, raise questions or simply listen to the responses of others in attendance. Light refreshments will be served.
ST. JOSEPH’S PARISH YOUTH GROUP will be holding its fourth Annual Christmas Carolling Event at Extendicare, on Bath Road, on Thursday, 7 December 2017, at 7:00 p.m. Youth and their families are encouraged to come share this exciting occasion to provide entertainment for, and socialize with, residents of this local facility. PENANCE CELEBRATION The Advent Penance Celebration for St. Joseph’s will be held on Sunday, 10 December 2017, at 2:00 p.m. Following a brief liturgy, all will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. A number of visiting clergy will be present for this celebration, and all in the parish, and indeed from outside the parish, are most welcome to attend.
BUILDING FUND The monthly collection of the Building Fund will take place next weekend, 9-10 December 2017. Your support continues to make a difference. Thank you.
CHRISTMAS BASKETS Students from St. Paul and St. Thomas More schools will, again this year, be handing out decorated brown paper bags this weekend of 9-10 December 2017. You are invited to take one home, fill it with non-perishable groceries and return it to St. Joseph Church next weekend, 16-17 December 2017. The groceries will be used for the annual distribution of Christmas baskets by our parish. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Thank you to the students who are decorating the bags and giving them a personal, festive touch.
CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE Potluck & Appreciation Dinner will take place on Monday, 11 December 2017, following the 5:15 p.m. Mass. Please drop off your contributions of food before the Mass, so they can be kept hot if necessary, and mark if your food is vegetarian or gluten-free, for those who need to know. (For those coming just for dinner, it will start around 6:15 p.m.) Thank you!
CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT If your child is age 4 or older, and would like to participate in this year’s Nativity pageant at the 5:15 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass, please plan to attend practices at the church on Sunday, 10 and 17 December 2017, after the 11:00 a.m. Mass, as the pageant participants will be practising with the Christmas choir at that time. The pageant is narrated, and therefore the children do not have speaking roles; so even the shiest can participate. Older students are encouraged to take part, as we always need readers for Narrator, Lector and Prayer of the Faithful. All are welcome!
CHRISTMAS CONCERT Join us for an afternoon of Christmas music, featuring the local talent of Chris Murphy, Jon McLurg and Brian Flynn, (three members of the band, Turpin’s Trail) in the church on Thursday, 14 December 2017, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the parish hall; a free-will offering would be gratefully appreciated.
“BIRDS & FLOWERS” COLLECTION Each year, St. Joseph’s attempts to provide for those who are in need at this Christmas season. If you are in a position to assist those who require extra help, you are encouraged to place your contribution in an envelope, and to write your name and envelope number on it. This will enable the parish to continue to help others in the spirit of this season. Thank you for your assistance.
NEW YEAR’S EVE VIGIL St. Joseph’s annual New Year’s Adoration Vigil will commence after the 5:15 p.m. Mass New Year’s Eve and continue until midnight. It will then resume at 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m., 1 January 2018. Please take advantage of this opportunity to begin the New Year by spending an hour with the Messiah. ADVENT MISSION 2017 “A Season of Expectation!” Will be held Monday-Wednesday, 4-6 December, at 7:00 p.m., at St. John the Apostle Church, 88 Patrick Street, Kingston. Monday’s theme is “A Season of Expectation,” which develops the expectation of Israel and of all humanity for the Messiah; Tuesday’s theme is “A Season of Peace,” an Advent service for Reconciliation; and Wednesday’s theme, “A Season of Healing,” offers the Sacrament of Anointing after the homily.
SEPARATED AND/OR DIVORCED Are you, or someone you know, experiencing the trauma of a Separation and/or Divorce? Where do you turn for help? Come to the New Life Group Meeting, a Catholic Ministry for the Separated and Divorced, on alternate Tuesday evenings. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, 5 December 2017, from 7:30-9:30 p.m., at the Francis J. Spence Pastoral Centre, 390 Palace Road, Kingston.
