Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

16 February 2020

If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

Today we hear about God’s Law, that it is primarily about genuine love of God and love of others.

Todays Readings

First Reading: Ecclesiasticus 15:15-20

We are taught to keep the commandments, for behaving faithfully is within our power.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:6-10

Paul warns believers against basing their faith on human wisdom instead of God’s wisdom.

Gospel: Matthew 5:17-37

Jesus did not reject the Jewish scriptures but brought them back to basics: love of God and of neighbour.  Our lives should reflect this love.

FIRST RECONCILIATION &  FIRST HOLY COMMUNION All parents of grade two students who wish that their children celebrate the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation here at St. Joseph’s are invited to visit the office to complete a Registration Form.  If your children attend St. Paul or St. Thomas More Catholic Schools, they will receive the form at school.  The Enrollment Ceremony will take place at the Masses on 28-29 March 2020.  Classes for Public/Home school children will commence in February.  First Reconciliation will be held on Tuesday, 14 April 2020, at 7:00 p.m., and First Communion will take place on Sunday, 3 May 2020, at the 11:00 a.m. Mass.

THE FLU SEASON As the winter season continues, so does the greater likelihood of flu and colds.  For that reason, some may prefer not to shake hands at the Sign of Peace.  So please understand, if the person beside you chooses to exchange a smile, a nod or a wave instead of the traditional handshake. KFL&A Public Health recommends the following ways to help stop the spread of the flu: wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer; avoid touching your face; cover your coughs and sneezes with your arm, not your hand; if you are sick, stay at home.  Thank you.

LENTEN PENANCE CELEBRATION The Lenten Penance Celebration for St. Joseph’s will be held on Sunday, 22 March 2020, at 2:00 p.m.  Following a brief liturgy, all will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  A number of visiting clergy will be present for this celebration, and all in the parish, and indeed from outside the parish, are most welcome to attend.

With absolution, we are reconciled to God and the Church.
