Third Sunday of Advent

15 December 2019

Happy is the one who does not lose faith in me.

Introduction

John the Baptist again takes centre stage, but in a different mood from last week.  In prison, he wants to know if Jesus is the one they are awaiting.  Jesus’ answer is enigmatic.  John is told to read the signs for himself.

Todays Readings

First Reading: Isaiah 35:1-6, 10

The prophet looks forward to a day when those who are blind will see, those who are deaf will hear and those who are lame will “leap like a deer.”

Second Reading: James 5:7-10

“Be patient,” says the writer.  Take the example of a farmer waiting for the crop to ripen. Impatience will not hasten the Lord’s return.

Gospel: Matthew 11:2-11

In prison and nearing death, John sends messengers to ask who Jesus is; Jesus replies that John must read the signs for himself.

AUTOMATIC DEBIT

Automatic Debit is available for those St. Joseph’s parishioners wishing to have their Sunday Offering and/or Building Fund Collection debited directly from their bank account on a monthly basis. Those who wish to begin Automatic Debit are asked to visit the parish office to complete the necessary paperwork.

2019 DONATIONS St. Josephs Parish Year-End occurs on 31 December; therefore, we ask that all 2019 donations be forwarded to the parish office by 31 December 2019.  Donations received after this date will need to be recorded in 2020.  If you wish to have a donation appear on your 2019 Tax Receipt, please ensure that the office has received it prior to 1 January.  Thank you.

DECEMBER BULLETINS Because Liturgical Publications are closed between 25 December – 2 January, they are requiring early submission of the bulletins in December.  Therefore, it is necessary to have the bulletin material a little earlier than usual.  We apologize if you have submitted an announcement that does not appear in the bulletin during that time.

2020 ENVELOPES are available for pick-up at the back of the church.  If you are currently not using envelopes but wish to do so, please contact the parish office at 613-547-5004 to request them, or complete the sign-up sheet on the table beside the envelopes.

CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT We are looking for children to fill various roles in the Christmas Eve Pageant and Christmas Eve Children’s Choir.  If your child is age 4 or older, and would like to participate in this year’s Nativity pageant at the 5:15 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass, please plan to attend upcoming practices at the church.  The pageant is narrated, and therefore the children do not have speaking roles; so even the shiest can participate.  Older students are encouraged to take part, as we always need readers for Narrator, Lector and Prayer of the Faithful.  All are welcome! Children, grade 3 and up, are also invited to rehearse for the Children’s Choir on Christmas Eve.  There are two rehearsals left, 15 and 22 December, from noon until 1:00 p.m. (immediately following the 11:00 a.m. Mass), for both the pageant and the choir in the church.  For information, contact sheilafowler16@gmail.com.

BIRDS & FLOWERS COLLECTION Each year, St. Joseph’s attempts to provide for those who are in need at this Christmas season.  If you are in a position to assist those who require extra help, you are encouraged to place your contribution in an envelope, and to write your name and envelope number on it.  This will enable the parish to continue to help others in the spirit of this season.  Thank you for your assistance.

MINISTRY FAIR On 18-19 January 2020, after all Masses, the Parish Engagement Group will host a Ministry Fair in the parish hall.  The various Parish Ministries will be highlighted, indicating how they each enrich the daily life of St. Joseph’s.  When you volunteer for a Ministry, you show what kind of parish you want to belong to!

PRAYER BOOK A book has been placed in a place of honour near the Blessed Sacrament.  You are invited to write in it those needs and concerns for which you would like our St. Joseph’s family / community to pray.  Wishing to respect everyone’s privacy, please keep all entries anonymous.

NEW YEARS EVE VIGIL St. Joseph’s annual New Year’s Adoration Vigil will commence after the 5:15 p.m. Mass on New Year’s Eve and continue until midnight.  It will then resume at 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m., 1 January 2020.  Please take advantage of this opportunity to begin the New Year by spending an hour with the Messiah.  For information, contact the parish office at 613-547-5004.  Sign-up sheets are available at the entrances.

CHRISTMAS TREE PICK-UP  St. Paul Catholic School Council will once again offer a Christmas Tree pickup fundraiser in Kingston.  Trees will be picked up on Saturday, 4 January 2020,  and taken to the recycling depot. Your $15.00 donation will directly support the School Council’s fundraising initiatives, which includes playground renewal projects.  Kindly leave your donation in your mailbox, in an envelope marked St. Paul’s, or taped to your door before 10:00 a.m. that morning.  Please email: st.paul.school.council@gmail.com, or call Dari at 613‑329‑9642 to leave your name and your address to schedule a pick up.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the St. Paul Catholic School Council.
