First Sunday of Advent

2 December 2018

“Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen.”

We may think of Advent as a time of light-hearted celebration as we get ready for Christmas, but today’s liturgy looks at it in a very different way, with warnings of disasters and exhortations to stand firm and pray constantly for the strength to survive all that is going to happen.

Todays Readings

First Reading: Jeremiah 33:14-16

The prophet tells the people that the Lord will fulfil the promise he made to the House of Israel.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2

by Frank Cosentino.  The Flying Fathers Hockey Club began in 1964, “a bunch of priests playing hockey,” developed into a spiritual and spirited journey for players, coaches and especially “hockey fans” – fans of the Canadian pastime.  This easy-flowing narrative brings together the passion for God with the passion for hockey.  The book will be available for sale at the parish office, during office hours.  Sales at the church entrances will take place 8-9 and 15-16 December.  Cost is $30.00.  This is a project of the St. Joseph’s Knights of Columbus.  A great gift for all ages!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COAT DRIVE for Hotel Dieu Hospital will take place until 31 December 2018.  Warm, washable winter coats (especially large sizes for men and women) are needed.  Ski jackets in all sizes are also needed.  We will also accept washable thermal socks, mitts, hats, blankets and winter boots.  We will pick up items if needed, or they may be dropped off.  Call Dwight at 613-544-6738 to make arrangements.  Items will be distributed at St. Mary’s Parish Centre, Brock Street, from 2-18 January 2019.

CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT We are looking for children to fulfill various roles in the Christmas Eve Pageant and Christmas Eve Children’s Choir.  If your child is age 4 or older, and would like to participate in this year’s Nativity pageant at the 5:15 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass, please plan to attend upcoming practices at the church.  The pageant is narrated, and therefore the children do not have speaking roles; so even the shiest can participate.  Older students are encouraged to take part, as we always need readers for Narrator, Lector and Prayer of the Faithful.  All are welcome! Children, grade 3 and up, are also invited to rehearse for the Children’s Choir on Christmas Eve.  There will be four rehearsals for the pageant and choir on Sunday, 2, 9, 16 and 23 December, from noon until 1:00 p.m. (immediately following the 11:00 a.m. Mass), for both the pageant and the choir in the church.  For information, contact
