Second Sunday of Advent

8 December 2019

Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Today’s readings speak to us of the peace we may expect with the coming of God’s kingdom.  And yet there is also an undertone of violence and retribution in the call for our repentance and change of heart.

Todays Readings

The spirit of the Lord will rest on the offspring of Jesse, and he will judge the wretched with integrity.

Second Reading: Romans 15:4-9

2019 DONATIONS St. Josephs Parish Year-End occurs on 31 December; therefore, we ask that all 2019 donations be forwarded to the parish office by 31 December 2019.  Donations received after this date will need to be recorded in 2020.  If you wish to have a donation appear on your 2019 Tax Receipt, please ensure that the office has received it prior to 1 January.  Thank you.

PENANCE CELEBRATION The Advent Penance Celebration for St. Joseph’s will be held this Sunday, 8 December 2019, at 2:00 p.m.  Following a brief liturgy, all will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  A number of visiting clergy will be present for this celebration, and all in the parish, and indeed from outside the parish, are most welcome to attend.

DECEMBER BULLETINS Because Liturgical Publications are closed between 25 December – 2 January; they are requiring early submission of the bulletins in December, therefore, it is necessary to have the bulletin material a little earlier than usual.  We apologize if you have submitted an announcement that does not appear in the bulletin during that time.

CHRISTMAS BASKETS Students from St. Paul and St. Thomas More Catholic schools will, again this year, be handing out decorated brown paper bags this weekend, 7-8 December 2019.  You are invited to take one home, fill it with non-perishable groceries and return it to St. Joseph Church next weekend, 14-15 December 2019.  The groceries will be used for the annual distribution of 50 Christmas baskets by our parish.  Monetary donations will also be accepted.  Thank you to the students for decorating the bags and giving them a personal touch.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! We are sending out an urgent call for Salvation Army Kettle volunteers at Loblaws (Kingston Centre), for December.  Shifts are one-hour and run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you are able to offer up an hour of your time, please call Sharon Lillis at 613-549-0559, or email

2020 ENVELOPES are available for pick-up at the back of the church.  If you are currently not using envelopes but wish to do so, please contact the parish office at 613-547-5004 to request them, or complete the sign-up sheet on the table beside the envelopes.

BUILDING FUND  The monthly collection of the Building Fund will take place this weekend, 7-8 December 2019. Thank you for your support.

BAKE & CRAFT SALE AND THEME BASKET RAFFLE, hosted by the Catholic Women’s League, will take place this weekend, 7-8 December 2019, after all Masses, in the parish hall.  Pies, breads, cookies, scones and many other baked goods.  Tickets will be sold for the Theme Basket Draw.

CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT We are looking for children to fill various roles in the Christmas Eve Pageant and Christmas Eve Children’s Choir.  If your child is age 4 or older, and would like to participate in this year’s Nativity pageant at the 5:15 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass, please plan to attend upcoming practices at the church.  The pageant is narrated, and therefore the children do not have speaking roles; so even the shiest can participate.  Older students are encouraged to take part, as we always need readers for Narrator, Lector and Prayer of the Faithful.  All are welcome! Children, grade 3 and up, are also invited to rehearse for the Children’s Choir on Christmas Eve.  There will be three rehearsals for the pageant and choir on Sunday, 8, 15 and 22 December, from noon until 1:00 p.m. (immediately following the 11:00 a.m. Mass), for both the pageant and the choir in the church.  For information, contact

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY will take place on Monday, 9 December 2019, at 7:30 p.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral.  Archbishop Mulhall will preside.  Reception to follow at École Cathédrale.  All are cordially invited to attend.

  1. JOSEPHS YOUTH GROUP will gather on Friday, 13 December 2019, from 6:30-8;30 p.m., in the parish hall. We will enjoy social time with fun ice-breakers, games, Christmas carols and hot chocolate, as well as some quiet time in the church to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. For information, contact Alison at, or Angela at 613-547-8116.

BIRDS & FLOWERS COLLECTION Each year, St. Joseph’s attempts to provide for those who are in need at this Christmas season.  If you are in a position to assist those who require extra help, you are encouraged to place your contribution in an envelope, and to write your name and envelope number on it.  This will enable the parish to continue to help others in the spirit of this season.  Thank you for your assistance.

MINISTRY FAIR On 18-19 January 2020, after all Masses, the Parish Engagement Group will host a Ministry Fair in the parish hall.  The various Parish Ministries will be highlighted, indicating how they each enrich the daily life of St. Joseph’s.  When you volunteer for a Ministry, you show what kind of parish you want to belong to!

PRAYER BOOK A book has been placed in a place of honour near the Blessed Sacrament.  You are invited to write in it those needs and concerns for which you would like our St. Joseph’s family / community to pray.  Wishing to respect everyone’s privacy, please keep all entries anonymous.

NEW YEARS EVE VIGIL St. Joseph’s annual New Year’s Adoration Vigil will commence after the 5:15 p.m. Mass on New Year’s Eve and continue until midnight.  It will then resume at 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m., 1 January 2020.  Please take advantage of this opportunity to begin the New Year by spending an hour with the Messiah.  For information, contact the parish office at 613-547-5004.  Sign-up sheets are available at the entrances.
