Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
5 February 2017

“Seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.”

Introduction

We gather once more to be enlightened by Christ who, by his resurrection from the dead, overcame all the darkness of this world. He now empowers us to be a light of hope for all our brothers and sisters.

Today’s Readings

First Reading: Isaiah 58:7-10

Kindness towards others brings light to a darkened world.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Paul relies on the power of God rather than any show of oratory or philosophy in order to convey his knowledge of the crucified Christ.

Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16

The disciples of Jesus are to be salt and light to the earth, so that their good works may bring praise to our heavenly Father.

OUR PARISH

ST. JOSEPH’S VISITOR PROGRAMME A number of parishioners of St. Joseph’s may find it increasingly difficult to get out much, particularly in these winter months. Even getting to church may be a challenge, and yet you would like to keep contact with your parish. You may be living in your own home, a seniors’ residence or a nursing home.

If you, or someone whom you know, would appreciate having someone visit on behalf of the parish, please phone the parish office at 613-547-5004, and make arrangements for a visit. We look forward to hearing from you.

CATHOLIC MISSIONS IN CANADA COLLECTION A special Diocesan collection for Catholic Missions in Canada will be taken up this weekend, 4-5 February 2017. This collection will be forwarded to the Archdiocese no later than 6 March 2017; please ensure that you have made your donation by this date.

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE The Executive will meet on Monday, 6 February 2017, at 7:00 p.m. in the parish hall. The General Meeting will take place on Monday, 13 February 2017, at 7:00 p.m., in the parish hall. The Reaffirmation Ceremony of the Council Executive will take place. We will also be collecting toiletries from members to be given to St. Vincent de Paul, to help those in need: toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, non-alcoholic mouthwash, nail care items, hair brushes, moisturizing lotion, lip balm, chapstick, dental floss, etc., as we have in past years. Any items will be most appreciated. Thank you to Bev Burns, our January speaker; her talk was vivacious, fun and very informative.

If you wish to become a member or to renew your membership, please place your $20.00 fee in an envelope and write your name, address, telephone number and “CWL” on the envelope, and drop in the collection basket by 5 February 2017.

BUILDING FUND The monthly collection of the Building Fund will take place next weekend, 11-12 February 2017. Your support continues to make a difference. Thank you.
