LETTER OF THE CCCB REGARDING MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IN DYING The Federal Government has recently announced a consultation on the expansion of eligibility for medical assistance in dying.  The Most Reverend Richard Gangnon, President  of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, has written to the Prime Minister a letter in which he expresses the serious concerns of the Bishops of Canada regarding the proposed changes to current legislation as well as the survey itself.  Copies of this letter are in St. Joseph’s Room, or check out the website

DOCUMENT OF THE CCCB REGARDING CREMATION AND FUNERAL LITURGIES The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has recently published a document that has been developed specifically to assist and advise the bereaved or others involved in planning funerals.  It provides basic information on the Church’s perspectives on death, praying for the deceased, mourning, funerals and cremation.  It also summarizes the Church’s directives on the presence of cremated remains within the funeral and on the proper respect to be shown for the dispensation of cremated remains.  It thereby also reminds the faithful of the importance of involving the pastor and the parish in funeral preparations.  Copies of the pamphlet may be found in the St. Joseph’s Room or check out the website
