Pentecost Sunday

20 May 2018

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit.

Introduction

As the Easter season ends, we celebrate a whole new beginning: the Spirit-filled disciples of Jesus begin their apostolate to witness to the risen Christ.  The task did not end with the Twelve; our apostolate is that same witness, that same making visible the presence of Christ in today’s world.

Todays Readings

First Reading: Acts 2:1-11

On the final day of Passover, Jesus’ disciples receive the Holy Spirit in a way that recalls the giving of the Law to the Israelites at Mount Sinai.

Second Reading: Galatians 5:16-25

The fruits of the Holy Spirit are so much different from other fruits.  Only the Holy Spirit can bring the fruits of love, peace, patience, gentleness.

Gospel: John 15:26-27, 16:12-15

The Holy Spirit, the Advocate, will be Jesus’ witness when he comes and, through the Spirit, Jesus’ followers also become his witnesses.
