23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
4 September 2016

“None of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.”

As Christians baptized into Christ’s body, we are all his disciples. As we gather today to learn again what it means to follow Jesus, let us open our hearts to receive his call to us afresh.

Today’s Readings

First Reading: Wisdom 9:13-18

We are called to open our minds to God’s gift of Wisdom if we want to learn the truth of God’s intentions.

Second Reading: Philemon 9-10, 12-17

From prison, Paul seeks to restore Onesimus to Philemon, no longer seen as the world sees him – as a slave – but as a dear brother.

Gospel: Luke 14:25-33

People crowd round to learn from Jesus. But he cautions them: to be a real disciple of his is costly.
