Christ before all Others

Christ before all Others

The Gospel today presents us with some of the most challenging words of Jesus. He tells us that whoever loves father or mother, son or daughter more than Him is not worthy of Him. At first, these words may sound difficult or even unsettling. Jesus is certainly not asking us to love our families less. Rather, He is teaching us that He must be the center of our lives. When Christ occupies the first place in our hearts, every other relationship becomes stronger, purer, and more life-giving. Love for God does not compete with love for others; instead, it transforms and perfects it.

Reflecting on today’s Gospel Reading, each of us can ask a simple question: Is Christ truly first in my life? We often say that we love God, but our priorities reveal what matters most to us. Do we make time for prayer? Do we participate faithfully in the Eucharist? Do we allow our faith to influence the way we speak, work, and treat others? Putting Christ first does not necessarily mean doing extraordinary things. It means allowing Him to guide the ordinary choices we make each day.

This week, let us put today’s Gospel into practice in one concrete way. Let us intentionally perform one act of kindness without expecting anything in return. Let us forgive someone who has offended us, visit someone who is lonely, welcome a stranger, encourage someone who is discouraged, or simply spend quality time with our family without distractions. These small acts of love are precious in God’s sight because they become visible signs of Christ’s presence in the world.
