Do not be afraid

Today’s readings speak to a reality that every Christian experiences: fear. Fear of rejection, fear of criticism, fear of failure, fear of standing alone, and sometimes even fear of living our faith openly.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples three times: “Do not be afraid.” He knows that following Him will not always be easy. The disciples would face opposition, misunderstanding, and persecution. Yet Jesus assures them that they are never abandoned by God.

The prophet Jeremiah understands this struggle. He remained faithful to God’s message, but people mocked him and plotted against him. He felt isolated and discouraged. Yet he could still say, “The Lord is with me like a mighty champion.” Jeremiah teaches us that courage is not the absence of fear; courage is trusting God in the midst of fear.

Many people today hide their faith because they are afraid of what others may think. We may hesitate to pray in public, speak about our beliefs, defend Christian values, or invite someone back to church. Jesus reminds us that our faith is not something to be hidden. The Gospel is meant to be lived openly through our words, actions, and witness.

Perhaps each morning this week we can begin the day with a simple prayer: “Lord, I place my fears in Your hands. Help me to trust You and to witness to You with courage.”

Jesus’ message today is clear: Do not be afraid. You are precious in God’s eyes. He knows you, loves you, and walks with you. Therefore, live your faith with confidence and joy.
