What Kind of Soil is my Heart
Every farmer knows that the quality of the seed is important, but even the best seed cannot produce a harvest if it falls on poor soil. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that the seed is the Word of God. The seed is always good. The real question is not, “Is God’s Word powerful?” The question is, “What kind of soil is my heart?”
Many people come to Mass every Sunday. They hear the same readings, receive the same Eucharist, and yet they leave unchanged. Why? Jesus says it depends on the condition of the heart.
Some hearts are like the path. God’s word never sinks in because they are distracted by phones, worries, entertainment, or resentment. The word is heard but never welcomed.
Some hearts are rocky ground. They are enthusiastic when life is easy but abandon prayer when suffering comes. Their faith has no deep roots.
Some hearts are filled with thorns. The Word grows, but anxiety, the pursuit of wealth, and endless busyness choke it. We can become so occupied making a living that we forget to make a life with God.
Finally, there is the good soil. Good soil is not perfect soil. It is a heart that is humble, receptive, and willing to change. Such a heart allows God’s Word to bear fruit—in forgiveness, kindness, generosity, patience, and love.
