God is Love, God is Communion

On this great solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, the Church invites us to reflect on the deepest mystery of our faith: that God is One, yet Three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Many people think of the Trinity as something difficult to understand, and in many ways it is. Even the saints admitted that the Trinity is a mystery beyond the full grasp of the human mind. But the Trinity is not a problem to solve; it is a reality to live. The Trinity tells us who God is, and who we are called to become.

At the heart of the Trinity is love. The Father loves the Son completely. The Son receives that love and gives Himself back completely to the Father. The Holy Spirit is the bond of love between them.

God is therefore not loneliness, but communion. Before the world was created, before human beings existed, there was already perfect love within God Himself. That is why the Bible tells us that “God is love.” Love is not something God occasionally does; love is who God is.

And because we are created in the image and likeness of God, we are also created for love and relationship. No human being can survive spiritually in isolation. We are made for communion with God and with one another.

One of the great problems of our modern world is that many people are connected digitally but disconnected personally. We have more communication devices than ever before, yet many people feel lonely, divided, and misunderstood. The Trinity reminds us that true life is found in relationships rooted in love, unity, forgiveness, and self-giving.

The Trinity also teaches us something important about family and community life. In the Trinity, the Persons are distinct, yet united. The Father is not the Son. The Son is not the Holy Spirit. Yet they live in perfect unity. This teaches us that unity does not mean sameness. In families, parishes, and communities, we can have different personalities, opinions, gifts, and responsibilities, yet still remain united in love.
