Do not Let your Hearts be Troubled

In today’s Gospel, Jesus Christ speaks words that touch the deepest part of our human experience: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” These are not empty words. They are spoken to people who were confused, afraid, and uncertain about the future. The disciples sensed that something was about to change, and they felt lost.

That is not far from our own reality. There are moments in life when the heart is troubled—when health fails, when family tensions arise, when plans collapse, or when the future feels unclear. Even in faith, we sometimes experience doubt or dryness. Jesus does not pretend these struggles do not exist. Instead, He invites us into something deeper: “Have faith in me.”

Faith, then, is not simply believing that God exists. It is trusting that Christ is present even when we do not understand what is happening. It is choosing to rely on Him when everything else feels uncertain.

When Thomas asks, “Lord, how can we know the way?”, he gives voice to a question we all ask at different moments of our lives. We want clarity. We want direction. We want certainty. And Jesus responds with a powerful and personal answer: “I am the way and the truth and the life.” He does not point to a map. He points to Himself.
